• Data collection arrangements

  Clinical data is collected from patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)infection. Data is stored in a database designed specifically for HCV Research UK to coexist alongside the HCV Research UK Tissue Bank.

  On first contact with the patients, baseline data is collected that reflects routine clinical practice such as demographics, risk factors for HCV infection and dates of exposure to risk, disease history, treatments received and outcomes (if applicable) and laboratory test results. Patients' physicians will then subsequently provide updates to the data (yearly in the first two years and 2-yearly thereafter) and track patients' health status including treatment and disease outcomes.

• Research programme

  The purpose for creating the database is to underpin high quality science in the UK and elsewhere relating to HCV infection for many years to come. The Clinical Research Database is a key component of the collaborative project HCV Research UK. Together with the Research Tissue Bank derived from the same patient cohort they have supported and have the potential to continue to support research across a wide range of disciplines, and thereby to enable key current and future research questions to be addressed: - Why some people clear the virus spontaneously (without treatment) - Why the disease progresses at different speeds and to different degrees in different people - Why some people respond to treatment better than others. The resource is available to the HCV research community (both within and outside the UK) who are encouraged to submit proposals for use of the data and Tissue Bank material.
