  • Research summary

Advanced lung cancer poses significant challenges for patients and healthcare professionals, including poor survival rates, reduced quality of life (QoL), functional decline, and limited treatment options. Survival rates for stage 4 lung cancer are low, with around 21.8% surviving one year and 4.3% surviving five years (NHS Digital, 2023b). While exercise has been shown to improve physical capacity, reduce fatigue, and enhance QoL for curative cancer patients, research on its use as a complementary approach for advanced lung cancer remains limited. This may be due to perceived physical limitations and disability in this population.
    Aims
This research aims to explore the barriers, motivators, and facilitators to physical activity from the perspectives of both people living with advanced lung cancer and the healthcare professionals (HCPs) supporting their care. The study will use the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW), a framework for designing and evaluating interventions, to guide the identification of key behaviours and strategies to promote physical activity. The results of this study will be used in the future to guide the development of a patient and healthcare informed physical activity intervention.

    Objectives
    1. Use Focus groups or Interviews with topic guides developed using the Behaviour Change Wheel to explore healthcare professionals practices, barriers, and facilitator to physical activity in advanced lung cancer care.
    2. Use Focus groups or Interviews with topic guides developed using the Behaviour Change Wheel to explore people living with advanced lung cancers knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to participating in physical activity programs.
