Research summary
Common chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema are associated with distressing physical skin symptoms such as disfiguring itching skin rash and bleeding skin marks. A visible unpleasant skin rash in growing children or adults for many years can subject them to embarrassment, anxiety, stress, insomnia, depression or anger, and affect their self-esteem, social and leisure activity, career choice and school or work performance (Balieva et al., 2016; Dalgard et al., 2015; Augustin et al., 2015; Mahe et al., 2015). In 2003, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin (APPGS) decided to conduct an enquiry into the psychological and social effects of skin diseases and to produce a number of recommendations designed to influence the future planning and delivery of care. However, 10 years later the problems raised in the Group’s 2003 report continue to exist. There is a need for rapid access to effective medical treatment, including psychological support, access to medical social workers and occupational therapy. Understanding patient’s need can help service provider to offer effective quality services (APPGS, 2013). My aim is to provide a “self-management tool” questionnaire that can assess patient’s feedback on the care they received and their challenges and needs to manage their chronic illness. My future aim is to attach this tool to each patient’s prescription to assist such patient’s management.
