  • Research summary

Changes in appetite and glucose tolerance are found in a number of clinical situations. These alterations can be due to the clinical condition itself or to side effects of treatment. They are clinically important comorbidities which can present a significant burden on quality of life and disease management or recovery.

The appetite control system is complex and comprises many hormonal, neural and psychological signals. However there are several hormones which are released from the gut that are integral to this system. They also play an important role in the control of blood glucose. Better understanding the levels of these hormones in patients with conditions which may be associated with altered appetite and glucose metabolism is important to improve our knowledge of the regulation of these hormones. This could lead to improvements in clinical care and better inform us of the potential of the hormones as therapeutic targets.

The aim of the current study is to investigate the role of gastrointestinal hormones in human diseases affecting appetite and glucose metabolism in order to better understand these important hormones.
