Research summary
Music therapy can reduce mental illness symptoms and may be an important part of inpatient care. Hospital stays are short, so frequent sessions are needed to make a difference. A PhD study found how intensive group music therapy can be provided to appeal to patients and give positive experiences. To put these findings into practice, the next step is to develop guidance for music therapists.
This research will develop guidelines by running 4 discussion groups (focus groups) with music therapists (2 groups) and staff who work on an inpatient ward (2 groups) and interviews with up to 16 service users. If it is not possible for staff to come to a focus group we will also offer the option of an individual interview.
We will ask people about their views on how to best provide group music therapy on inpatient wards and how we can best train music therapists to do this. The discussions will be written up word for word (transcribed). We will then group similar ideas together (thematic analysis) and use these to draft guidelines for practice.
