Research summary
The Cass Review, commissioned by NHS England to steer appropriate care for young people (YP) experiencing gender-related distress (GRD), highlights the need for research in this area. Its interim report states: “a much better understanding is needed….of those presenting for help, their support needs and the full range of potential treatment options”*. This project is focussed on one such option - a local third sector service designed to support YP who are experiencing GRD, primarily through group psychotherapy. The research aims to:
(1) Better understand the user population by analysing anonymised information on the key characteristics, presenting concerns, self-reported wellbeing and patterns of engagement of the estimated 150 YP who have been referred.
(2) Better understand how service users experience this service in terms of its benefits, limitations and potential to contribute to meaningful change. It will do this by analysing YP and Parents/Carer (PC) interviews and by analysing the service user feedback that has been routinely collected during and at the end of engagement from YP and PCs since the service began.*https://cass.independent-review.uk/publications/interim-report/
