  • Research summary

Parental anxiety can play a role in children’s subsequent mental health, functioning and physical health, depending on the Long Term Condition (LTC) the child has. Previous research has investigated reducing transmission of anxiety from parents to children through running a one day parenting group intervention and they found positive outcomes from this. However it has not been investigated with parents of children with LTC's to see if similar outcomes can be achieved. The aim is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a parenting group intervention for reducing anxiety in parents of children with LTC's, measured by participant recruitment and retention, completion of outcome measures and participant feedback. Four researchers will have a different LTC target group which they will investigate the same protocol with. Participants will be parents of children who have LTC's (diabetes, asthma, food allergies, cancer)aged 2-16 who are under the care of Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. The Paediatric Psychology Support Service at Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital will identify suitable participants in line with the inclusion and exclusion criteria and send out invitation letters to the parents. If participants get in contact expressing interest, they will attend a brief telephone screening (around 20 minutes) to ensure they meet our inclusion criteria as well as answer any questions they may have. For each condition, parents will attend a full day workshop (09.30-15.00)and will have a follow up at one month and three month where they will repeat the outcome measures. At the three month follow up they will also have the option to complete an individual interview about the experience of attending the workshop. Participants will be given options as to how they wish to complete the follow up measures/individual interviews e.g face to face or through telephone. The interview will be no longer than 30 minutes.
