Research summary
Background
Physical activity, diet and mental wellbeing can play a central role as causal or preventative factors in many types of cancer. However, health systems often do little to improve these areas until people are unwell. Preventative interventions for health behaviour change can reduce cancer risk and offer broader health benefits. The NHS long-term plan and cancer strategy emphasize the importance of prevention and integration with local services to support ongoing lifestyle changes.Aims
This project aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of an integrated, group cancer primary prevention programme called Nourish, Move, Flourish (NMF). The project will also gain interview feedback from patients to help improve the programme for wider use and future research. Methods
Two cohorts of 25-30 participants aged 30-60 not diagnosed with a long-term condition will be invited to attend NMF. NMF will comprise seven weekly, two-hour sessions covering evidence-based interventions in physical activity, nutrition, mental wellbeing, sleep, long-term behaviour change, and effective use of health services. NMF content will be delivered by specialists in each area including General Practitioners; Clinical Psychologists; Nutritionists, and Exercise Physiologists. Personalised smart-messages will be used to support behaviour change between sessions; long-term follow-up support will be provided by Derby County Community Trust, offering access to exercise equipment, sessions, and group peer support. One cohort will also receive access to the Zoe personalised nutrition app.Anticipated Impact & Dissemination
This study aims to obtain initial evidence for the value of an integrated, community-based cancer primary prevention programme. NMF participants will be invited to become community champions, with a pathway developed towards co-facilitating future programmes and supporting sustainable expansion. The project’s anonymous research outputs will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences. Outcomes will also be disseminated via the East Midlands Cancer Alliance to other cancer alliances nationally, providing opportunity for wider testing, learning and adoption.REC name
