Research summary
This study consists of one-to-one interviews of 10-15 general practitioners (GPs), from the Haringey borough of London. Using qualitative methodology, the interviews will be semi-structured (using a topic guide or list of questions and prompts) and include a structured vignette (sample clinical case). Each interview will last from 45-60 minutes each.
The aim of this study is to gain a greater understanding of how some GPs in the U.K. attempt to diagnose and manage adolescents with mental health disorders, as well as some of the difficulties they face in this process. In addition, information about current guidance for GPs (on this topic) will be explored, as well as referrals to CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services). The focus on CAMHS will also include how these adolescents are managed until the referral occurs.
