Research summary
General practitioners are the most commonly used providers of mental health care in the UK. The current model of care informed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) highlights the value of person centred care, but is unclear about how exactly this can be achieved in practice. This study aims to explore how GPs and patients communicate about emotional problems in practice and to identify challenges, exemplary care, and 'what works well'.
This will be achieved by undertaking conversation analysis of a collection of pre-recorded. GP-patient consultations. The consultations analysed will be from the Bristol One in a Million Archive of GP-patient consultations. One in a Million: A study of primary care consultations; which is a dataset of 300 video-recoded patient visits with verbatim transcripts held at the data.bris Research Data Repository, University of Bristol.
The findings of this study will be used to inform the development of a short training course for GPs to support them when communicating with patients experiencing emotional problems.
