Research summary
The aim of this research is to understand how people living with HIV experience using their GP services, which are being provided as a Local Enhanced Service. This is a scheme local to Brighton which provides extra training for GPs on the management of patients with HIV, including advice about HIV medication and how it might interact with other medications they might prescribe. The study will involve inviting eight patients, who are generally well, but have seen their GP in recent months, to attend an interview. The interview will encourage them to talk about what it was like to visit their GP,how it made them feel, and to interpret what it meant to them. Participants may be invited to a second interview for clarification if necessary.Previous studies have outlined how both GPs and patients have been concerned about a lack of knowledge about HIV among GPs, which has been a barrier to good relationships and good communication between patients, GPs and clinics. It is intended that patient's views will provide information about the strengths and weaknesses of the Local Enhanced Service, which may contribute to future policy and practice decisions.
