Research summary
This study will recruit older adults aged 75 years of age to 90 years of age, living with type 2 diabetes, to partake in a 3-week intervention to look at the effect so consuming whey protein before meals and its impact on glycemic excursions. will operate as a single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, partial-crossover design, participants will be assigned to consume either 7.5g low-dose or 15g moderate-dose WP pre-loads (M-WP and L-LP, respectively) and a protein-depleted placebo (PLA) in a ready-to-drink shot 10 min before each of their main meals over a 7-day free-living period. Thus, participants will complete two 7-day intervention phases, PLA and one of either 7.5g or 15g WP pre-load. The only difference between the experimental groups will be the dose of protein: either 7.5g or 15g consumed pre-meal, for one of the two weeks. Details of the nutritional treatments are outlined below. Treatment sequences will be determined by an online randomizer that randomly assigned trial order in a balanced permutation.
Participants will also be asked if they would like to partake in an optional interview to allow us to gain a better understanding of the perception of supplementation among older populations and the principle of consuming protein supplements before meals as well as uncover any preconceptions about the benefits of protein supplementation before and after the study. The interview will take place over a video conference call or telephone with collaborators at Newcastle University, participants will elect to take part and consent to the interview in addition to the general consent form.
