  • Research summary

Diabetic patients are monitored how well they control their blood glucose levels over a period of three months by a test called HbA1c. However this test is not always used in patients with a different kind of haemoglobin ( oxygen carrying component), called a variant. Another test called fructosamine is normally used for this type of patients and is done at another site which takes time to get a result. This test also only shows how well controlled glucose levels are for a shorter time than the HbA1c test. The study aims to assess if patients with known variants can be monitored using HbA1c values obtained from the two machines we have in our hospital. This will save time and money and improve patient experience and outcome. This study will be conducted at the Medway Hospital and will last for about three months. Samples taken for diagnostic and or monitoring of diabetes will be used for this study.
