Research summary
Prior research has indicated a relationship between blood glucose levels and behavioural presentations. Furthermore, people with learning disabilities can express a large variation in behavioural presentations, and they are also a community that experiences some of the largest health inequalities. Due to these findings, study seeks to explore the relationship between blood glucose levels and behavioural presentations further within the context of the learning disability community, which is a novel exploration. This pilot study is proposed to take place on a forensic inpatient ward where participants will have their behaviour, mood, and blood glucose monitored for 7 days. Ward staff making additional observations and patients self-recording their mood. The choice of conducting this pilot in an inpatient was made due to the feasibility of regular observations being made, as ward staff already conduct regular observations as part of their work. If a relationship is found, this could lead to greater, more effective support for learning disability communities as their presentations of distressed behaviour could be managed through diet, along with sparking further research into this topic.
