  • Research summary

Some women develop diabetes (gestational diabetes mellitus) during pregnancy which resolves after the baby is born. However these women are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes later on. The risk of future diabetes varies worldwide (2.6% to 50%) based on the duration of follow up and the ethnicity of the population studied. Few studies have adequate follow up and none of the studies have examined the risk of diabetes in the offspring. Identifying risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes can be used to implement interventions for the preventing the development of Diabetes.
