Research summary
In the UK, approximately 15% of the working populations are employed in jobs requiring shift work. Shift work is defined as ‘working outside standard daytime hours’ which in the UK is taken as 7pm to 7am. Evidence shows that employees who regularly undertake night shift work are at an increased risk of developing metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes.
The aim is to compare the continuous 24 hour glucose profiles of free-living shift workers during day and night shift work. This research will help improve our understanding of why regular night shift workers have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
