Research summary
Carrying extra weight is very common in the UK, with more than half of adults now living with overweight or obesity. This can affect people’s health in many ways, including tiredness, breathlessness, joint pain, poor sleep, and medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Being above a healthy weight can also affect quality of life, for example by limiting physical activity, reducing confidence, or causing difficulties at work. In addition, there may be financial costs to individuals, such as spending more on medicines, specialist equipment, or weight management services.
This research will study the full impact of having a body mass index (BMI) above 25, which includes people who are overweight, obese, and those living with very high levels of obesity. We will gather information both from healthcare professionals who treat patients and from people living with overweight or obesity themselves.
By looking at symptoms, quality of life, and costs together, this project will help to develop better ways of measuring the severity of overweight and obesity. This can guide earlier support and more effective treatment.REC name
