Research summary
The 'Glasses in Classes' trial was conducted in Bradford in 2019-2021. It's aim was to share the results of school vision screening with participating schools so that they knew which children needed glasses and could ensure children wore them. Also an extra pair of glasses was funded for each child which was kept at school in case they came to school without their own pair. This original study monitored whether the intervention made children more likely to wear glasses at school, and whether their educational attainment improved, compared to children in non-intervention schools.
Preliminary results were good, so the DfE wants to fund this intervention in 4 more areas ('Pathfinders') in 2021-2022. The purpose of this study is to continue to monitor the effectiveness of this intervention, in terms of compliance with glasses wear and educational attainment, whilst it is being scaled up.
