Voice, swallowing and quality of life patient reported outcome questionnaire study comparing organ preservation against organ removal in Laryngeal Cancer, Glasgow Experience

We aim to complete a questionnaire study using validated patient reported outcome measures (PROM) evaluating voice, swallowing and quality of life in Laryngeal cancer.

A consent form, Patient Information Sheet (PIS) and single PROM questionnaire will be send to included patients by post. A follow-up telephone interview will also be carried out to ensure the questionnaire was received, answer any queries and assist with the questionnaires.

All alive patients being diagnosed with laryngeal cancer from January 2013 to December 2017 in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will be invited to participate.

The primary aim of this study is to determine patient reported outcome measures of voice, swallowing and quality of life in laryngeal cancer treated in Glasgow. This information will be used to answer the research questions below:

    1. Early stage disease (Stage 1/2)
    - Current evidence suggests transoral laser microsurgery and radiotherapy are similar in terms of survival outcomes. Research is required to determine which treatment allows optimal quality of life post-treatment

    2. Late stage disease (Stage 3/4)
    - Current research suggests that management with organ preservation and organ removal in late stage disease offers similar prognosis. However, there is a paucity of information regarding quality of life outcomes following treatment to guide management decisions.

No funding is required for this research
