Research summary
Gestational diabetes is a growing complication of pregnancy, limited information is available to women relating to the screening for and diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Women have indicated that they would like health messages to come from a trusted source and be simple to use. The use of digital animation can address problems with the need for communicating key health messages improving consistency of information and overcoming language and health literacy barriers. We have co-produced an animation to communicate key health messages about gestational diabetes and we now want to evaluate it. The information in the animation is spoken with subtitles and is currently in both Urdu and English. We aim to improve knowledge and awareness of health information relating to gestational diabetes within a multi-ethnic population. We will do this by recruiting 40 antenatal women (English and Urdu speaking) who have been identified as being at risk of developing gestational diabetes in early pregnancy. They will be asked to complete a short initial survey about their knowledge of gestational diabetes, they will then be given the link to the animation (which they can view again at anytime. They will receive a reminder text message at 24 weeks gestation. At 30 weeks gestation, they will be re-contacted via telephone for an audio recorded phone interview (with an interpreter if required). This interview will include a repeat of the short survey and will explore their experiences of using the animation. From the survey, we will compare knowledge of gestational diabetes before and after viewing the animation. Other data from the interviews will be subject to thematic analysis to assess women's feelings regarding accessibility and acceptability of the animation.
