Research summary
The research project will aim to explore the geographical variation in Barrett’s oesophagus in the West Yorkshire area, taking into account socio-economic status. This will be carried out using surveillance data of 500 patients collected over 12 years at Pontefract General Infirmary. Barrett’s oesophagus is important because it is a noted risk factor for oesophageal adenocarcinoma, a form of cancer of the oesophagus whose prevalence and incidence rates have been increasing in the West. Oesophageal adenocarcinoma has a poor survival rate. Understanding the spatial epidemiology of Barrett’s will be informative in relation to developing targetted interventions to limit disease development and progression in the community.
The researchers will not have any direct contact with the patients. Patients’ identifiable data will be collated locally at Pontefract hospital and extracted for analysis in anonymised format.
The data will be validated and updated by collating patient information on gender, age group, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, geographical census area and length of Barrett’s segment as well as date of diagnosis.
This data will be analysed at the University of Leeds where maps of disease rates will be generated across geographical areas relating to social economic status (deprivation scores). Geographical clustering will then be performed and any evidence of significant clustering determined.REC name
