Data collection arrangements
Paraffin embedded samples, frozen tissue and donated blood, urine, saliva and ascitic fluid surplus to diagnostic requirements, are collected from gynaecology and urology patients subject to fully informed consent and held as part of a research tissue bank (RTB) at the Royal Preston Hospital. The consent will also allow access to demographic information and clinical history, all records being held on a dedicated database secured within the hospital network. Samples are anonymised by number and research projects are peer-reviewed by members of the RTB Steering Group prior to release to researchers. Tissue is also available to researchers outside the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals collaborations but external REC approval will be requested before tissue release.
Research programme
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals in collaboration with local Universities and the Manchester BRC, hosts a wide range of research programmes with clinicians and scientists conducting investigation into novel areas of basic science, diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological and urological tumours. Existing collaborations comprise researchers from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust, Lancaster University, University of Lancashire, University of Manchester, University of Liverpool and members of the Manchester BRC. Previous research projects have had ethical approval to send anonymised tissue to our collaborators in Berlin and UAE.
