Research summary
The aim of the project is to collect and analyse cells taken from the surface of genital warts in order to understand the infection and transmission potential of these cells. This will involve removing the surface layer of cells from genital warts using sticky tape and analysing the surface cells for their infectivity and transmission potential. In particular, we will establish the extent to which transmission is facilitated by the release of infectious squamous cells from the epithelial surface, and whether these squames promote virus survival. The low risk HPV types (e.g. 6 and 11) are very poorly understood and studied (as the high risk HPV types predominate in research due to their oncogenic potential), and little is known about virus survival and virus release from the epithelial surface.
