  • Research summary

This study will build on previous investigations into the genetic causes of renal and lower urinary tract abnormalities. From previous research, we know that some problems with the kidney, bladder and lower urinary tract are caused by a change in a gene. However, we still haven't identified a cause for many of these conditions. Improving our understanding of the cause of these problems is important for aiding genetic counselling for affected families and it will also help doctors with the clinical management of their patients.

We plan to recruit patients who are affected by kidney, bladder or urinary tract problems of an unknown cause, along with their close family members. Study participants will be recruited at NHS hospitals at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Participants will be asked to provide a blood or saliva sample, along with permission to access their medical records for the study.

Some participants may benefit from study participation, if they are given a specific explanation for their problems which helps with the testing and treatment of their family members. However, some participants will not directly benefit from taking part although there will be a wider benefit with regards to improving overall clinical knowledge and understanding in this disease area.

Kidney Research UK is funding this cohort study. This study is planned to run for 2 years.
