  • Research summary

Patients who need support with minor illnesses normally attend their GP, but they can now also be referred to their local community pharmacy for these consultations. Since trials of service were evaluated in 2019, the focus has been on implementing the service and no further research has been done exploring patient perspectives of the referral pathway or the community pharmacy consultation service (CPCS). We wanted to find out about the experiences and opinions of people from the West Midlands who have been referred for the service and to develop recommendations on how GP CPCS can be improved with the help of staff from General Practitioners and community pharmacy.

We will invite at least 3330 patients who have used GP CPCS, from up to 40 general practices, to take part in an online survey. We estimate that with a 25-30% will respond to our survey and that we will have at least 1000 survey participants. These surveys will be designed carefully with a mixture of questions used in previous surveys and self-formulated questions that are either based on similar surveys or have been tested on members from the public. The feedback on the survey from patient and public involvement will be acted upon to ensure clarity of survey questions.
The survey data will be analysed and the findings be presented in a workshop with patients, policymakers, commissioners, and representatives from General Practices and community pharmacies. Based on the findings, we will work with the workshop participants to develop recommendations on how GP CPCS can be further improved.
