Research summary
Using local or regional anaesthesia (LA or RA) over general anaesthesia (GA) has been shown to be beneficial for patients in reducing the length of hospital stay, post-operative complications, pain, and nausea. However, there is a lack of systematic research in this area and evidence is mixed.
This research aims to inform the design of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing the outcomes of patients receiving LA or RA versus those receiving GA when undergoing emergency operations for inguinal hernia, hip fracture, and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). There are many aspects that may affect the successful implementation of an RCT in surgical settings, including the preferences of clinicians and patients of either treatment option. Also, when conducting surgery under LA or RA, patients can be given different levels of sedation, and therefore it can be unclear what the definition of the different anaesthesia methods are. These questions are going to be explored in interviews.
The study will last 15 months. Clinicians and patients with experience of hernias, hip fractures, or AAA will take part in an interview with a researcher to explore the above research questions. The interviews will be analysed using thematic analysis techniques, which will result in a summary of clinician and patient viewpoints that will inform the design of an RCT in this area.
