Research summary
The study will significantly contribute to the understanding of the genetic determinants of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) and inform the development of personalised approaches to electroconvulsive therapy. The project will do this by studying people affected by BD or MDD and are scheduled to receive ECT or have undergone a course of ECT. We will collect data and blood samples from each participant assessment. DNA will be extracted from the blood samples and an aliquot of this will be sent to the US for further genetic analysis.
