Research summary
Many conditions are responsible for gastrointestinal symptoms in addition to those where the primary problem is in the stomach or intestine. Validated symptom questionnaires exist for monitoring specific diseases but those of a more general nature suitable for screening for gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with other conditions are lacking. The proposed study will compare a new and simple generic scale with two validated scales, one of which has a narrower focus (dyspepsia) and the other of which was devised for the American setting and is not well worded for the UK. Recruited subjects with and without underlying gastrointestinal disorders will complete all three questionnaires (a total of 48 questions) and the results will be compared for the different forms of validation.
