Research summary
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the UK. Recent research has suggested that PD originates within the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) before pathophysiological changes are seen within the brain. The research has noticed patients with PD report issues with digestion up to 10 years before they have classical symptoms of PD.
This project is unique because it will delve deeper into the reports claiming GIT symptoms occur prior to diagnosis. This 7 month single centre cohort study will include 100 participants. 50 participants with early stage Parkinson's disease and their respective spouses. Both validated self-reported and clinician based questionnaires will be used to identify GIT symptoms, nutrition habits for participants with early stage PD and their spouses. Alongside this, stool samples will be collected to analyse variances in gut microbiota.
