  • Research summary

Alcohol dependent patients develop a condition called Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) due to a lack of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) in the diet. The patient becomes confused and unsteady walking (gait ataxia) develops. WE is under- diagnosed by clinicians.
We wish to objectively quantify ataxia in alcohol dependent patients who have been admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal who are at risk of WE. This simple pilot study will help us to develop a scoring system which will allow clinicians to objectively chart a patient’s response to treatment. In the future this simple scoring system may be used as a simple, objective, validated scoring tool to aid clinicians with admission/discharge decisions in the Emergency Department.
