Research summary
King's College Hospital (KCH) is opening a new critical care unit (CCU), which is designed to improve patient, relative and staff experiences and outcomes. In comparison to the established intensive care units (ICUs) at KCH, the unit has a different layout, equipment and systems to deliver care. It is important to gather opinions of people who are affected by the change of ICU environment to understand any barriers to its success. Before the unit opens we will conduct focus groups to understand which elements people expect to work well and which elements they think might not work so well. Once the unit has opened we will conduct more focus groups and interviews to understand the experiences of the patients, relatives and staff who have worked on, or have been cared for in the new CCU. This will help identify the reality of what is working well and what isn’t working as well. An evidence based framework will be used to guide the questions for interviews and focus groups. This framework will also be used to analyse the results. The results will help us understand where extra information or training might be useful to direct staff to make best use of the new facilities. The study will start before the CCU opens and it will close approximately 6 months later, once the results have been gathered and analysed.
