Research summary
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) has both biological and biomechanical aspects to the disease. The loading of a knee joint is altered in OA compared to a healthy knee. This altered loading is an important risk factor in OA but it is not fully understood whether the altered loading is the cause or the result of OA. We wish to better understand the relationship between the biomechanics of OA and the biological changes. To do this we can evaluate the biomechanical profile of a person through assessing how they walk i.e their gait and gait characteristics. This study will produce a biomechanical profile of the gait characteristics of participants with near normal knees (non-OA) and early OA.
All participants recruited for gait assessment will be on the basis that they are undergoing a future intervention on their knee during in which they will consent to the collection of discard tissue a variety of biological analyses (Concurrent study IRAS 280509)
The results of the biological assessment will be compared to the biomechanical assessment to enhance our understanding of the relationship between the two in OA. This study will be funded by the Medical Research Council and conducted in the Biant Research Lab, Trafford General Hospital part of the Manchester University Foundation Trust.REC name
