Research summary
There is current emphasis on validating tools for assessing the functional ability of critically ill patients. Such measurements allow early identification of functional deficits that may otherwise prolong treatment and hospital admission. Burn injuries, and subsequent treatment, can confound results when utilising tools validated for the general ICU population. Currently no validated functional outcome measure exists for use in the burns ICU
This research will be conducted at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, over a six month period.
This two-stage study will use qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the content validity and inter-rater reliability of a new acute burns functional outcome tool; the Functional Assessment for Burns (FAB-CC). A focus group of five physiotherapists from an acute burns team will be asked to discuss and appraise components of the FAB-CC. Themes identified through thematic content analysis will be used to finalise its content. A reliability study with multiple raters scoring single patient assessments will provide data for both descriptive and inferential statistics to allow comment on inter-rater reliability of the FAB-CC.
