  • Research summary

With an increase in the ageing population across the world the number of people with musculoskeletal disorders that affect mobility and activities of daily living will rise, resulting in a negative effect on ability to work and increased financial demands on Health Care providers. Osteoarthritis (OA) affects patient’s well being due to pain which affects a patient’s ability to perform daily activities.
OA symptoms significantly limit an individual's ability to rise from a chair, stand comfortably, walk, or climb stairs. Ultimately, these limitations lead to a loss of functional independence. Using outcomes, such as walking analysis and activity monitoring have been shown in recent years to be a more effective and tools than pain scales alone in assessing and quantifying the disability and pain associated with OA.

The mechanics of walking on a level surface have been well investigated and characterized. but we need to understand how OA affects the way people walk adn perform day to day tasks such as climbing stairs. A greater understanding of walking will be useful for monitoring the changes that occur in patients with knee OA. Therefore, in our motion analysis laboratory this study will observe in walking characteristics, and ability to complete task such getting out of a chair in patients with knee OA and compare them to healthy subjects in one visit of approximately two hours. We will also collect data as to how many steps people take over two days by using an activity monitor on their leg.
