Research summary
Lung cancer remains the third most common cancer in the UK, with rates in North-West England, in particular Blackpool, remaining consistently above average despite national decline. Due to this greater local occurrence, this study will be carried out in the Blackpool Victoria Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. The aim of this study is to apply vibrational spectroscopy techniques (FT-IR spectroscopy) to formalin-fixed tissues as a potential new diagnostics method to explore its capacity to differentiate between tumour types. This study will be conducted using the tissue pathology archive of lung tissue samples and therefore does not necessitate an eligibility criteria or patient participation, and will be conducted over an 18 month period.
