  • Research summary

"Frailty" is a commonly used word. In medical terms, it indicates someone who is less likely to make a good recovery following illness or injury, due to accumulation of damage to tissues and organs.
It has most commonly been used in geriatric populations, but it is increasingly recognised to be relevant to younger people in healthcare settings.
No work has been done to date in the setting of neurorehabilitation, where the typical patient is often younger than those on usual hospital wards, but has experienced severe neurological illness or injury. It is often difficult to predict outcomes in these patients and we are keen to investigate if some of the commonly used frailty measures could be relevant to our neurorehabilitation population.
