  • Research summary

In this study we set out to examine the changes in the body that happen during and after hip replacement surgery, and how they relate to outcomes after surgery. The main aim of the study is to examine changes in the muscles after surgery, and the factors that influence muscle wasting after surgery. To do this, participants will be asked to undergo walking and strength tests before and after surgery, and ultrasound and MRI scans of the legs before and after surgery. During the surgery itself, the surgeon will take a muscle biopsy, and we will take blood tests. We will then compare the changes in the body (for example, inflammation) with muscle changes (eg the extent of muscle wasting) and walking changes.

In another group of participants, we will examine changes in the brain which occur during and after surgery. MRI brain scan will be performed along with memory tests before and after surgery. Before the surgery, a spinal catheter will be placed and spinal fluid samples will be taken before, during and after surgery. This will allow us to examine the changes in the brain during and after surgery, and whether they relate to other changes in the body. Participants will be offered the choice about entering the 'Muscle and strength' arm compared to the 'Brain and Memory' arm of the study.
