Research summary
Frailty is an age-related condition of increased vulnerability to illness, although not everyone will develop frailty as they get older. Sarcopenia is a related condition of reduced muscle strength and size; the risk of this is also increased as we get older. Multiple definitions for frailty and sarcopenia exist, however, these were mainly developed from stable populations of older adults living in the community. Whilst there is increasing understanding of the need to measure frailty and sarcopenia in hospital settings, we still don't know what the best way to do this is, and we don't know how this information can be used to predict outcomes. We know that for many older people, leaving hospital and not needing to come back to hospital is what matters to them the most. This study will comprehensively assess older adults admittedly urgently to hospital, and assess what factors (including frailty and sarcopenia) are most predictive of readmission to hospital within 30 days.
