Research summary
Research question: How many patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) also have certain other conditions alongside (comorbidities) and can telephone-based coaching help these patients to manage their axSpA and comorbidities effectively?
Participants will be approached either by a letter from a local rheumatologist or from the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register in Ankylosing Spondylitis (BSRBR-AS). If they agree to take part they will attend an appointment to answer a questionnaire and have clinical data collected at their usual hospital. We will recruit around 75 participants to this part.
A telephone coaching programme based on previous programmes in other conditions will be developed and a small number of the above participants will be invited to try the coaching programme; 15 with comorbidities and 15 without. Participants in the coaching programme will have an initial assessment call with a coach then 6 weekly coaching calls, answer a follow-up postal questionnaire and be interviewed to find out how acceptable the coaching programme is to participants.
