Research summary
A questionnaire and interview based follow up study evaluating the physical activity and self efficacy of patients who have undergone the PREPARE for Surgery prehabilitation programme for oesophago-gastric cancer surgery.
PREPARE for Surgery is a personalised prehabilitation programme for patients undergoing surgery for oesophago-gastric cancer. During this programme, patients are prescribed an individualised exercise programme and weekly adherence is monitored. However, very little is known about whether patients continue to exercise after surgery and what factors affect exercise behaviour.
We have shown that a person’s self efficacy, defined as their self-confidence to achieve goals, is associated with exercise participation before surgery. This study is will establish how much exercise patients undertake after surgery, how self-efficacy changes in the post-operative period and whether this is related to exercise levels and finally gain an understanding of patients attitude towards exercise after prehabilitation.
All patients who have completed the PREPARE for Surgery programme will be contacted and a questionnaire completed over the telephone or via email, depending on patient preference. Semi-structured interviews will also be conducted on 8-10 patients.
