Research summary
As part of a previous research project at the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit (SPVU), thirty patients participated in an exercise programme that involved 3 weeks of inpatient exercise followed by 12 weeks performed at home as an outpatient. All of these patients had pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs) that caused them to have limitation in their functional ability. The patients were all stable on their medical therapy and the purpose of the study was to investigate the impact that exercise training had on their exercise capacity, functional class, blood markers of disease severity and quality of life.
At the end of the study, the patients all continued follow up as outpatients in the SPVU. As part of standard care, they continue to have the same non-invasive assessments of their health recorded at each appointment. These data are stored in their clinical records at Golden Jubilee National Hospital.
The study will look to gather the data on follow up of the exercise study patients over the 3 years since the end of their participation in the exercise study. This will allow us to assess the impact that exercise training had on outcome measures of the patients' condition after they left the exercise programme.
