  • Research summary

The aim of this project to study early brain development in Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) - a common genetic condition seen in 1:= in 2500 individuals. Children with NF1 have difficulties with learning, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). The aim of this project is to study the developing foetal brain from the third trimester of pregnancy onwards. This is a proof of concept, feasibility study which will recruit pregnant mothers with a family history of NF1 (n=8) with a view to collecting detailed ultrasound and foetal brain imaging in the third trimester. Babies born to the mothers recruited to this study will be invited to take part in the ongoing EDEN study(IRAS ID 200297). Qualitative interviews with the mothers will help us identify the feasibility and acceptability of our protocol. Foetal brain imaging is technically very challenging- due to foetal movement in the womb. Therefore, in order to develop our foetal brain scan protocol, we request recruiting healthy pregnant mother (n=8).
