  • Research summary

Many people with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have problems with their memory and with their ability to learn new things. This can reduce their quality of life. At the moment, there are no medicines or treatments available that can treat the memory and learning problems associated with TLE. This study has been designed to see if a treatment, which we know works in animal models of epilepsy, can also work in humans with TLE.

The aim of this study is to see if people with TLE can improve their memory and learning by taking a short course of a medicine called fluoxetine. This is a commonly prescribed antidepressant medicine, more commonly known by the trade name Prozac. It has been shown in an animal model of epilepsy that two months of treatment with fluoxetine can improve memory and learning. This study has been designed to see if we can see the same effect in humans.
