Research summary
Extent of resection of high grade gliomas are linked with increased survival. 5-ALA is a surgical adjunct used to help define tumour tissue to enable more extensive resection using a special microscope filter. It highlights tumour areas that are not seen using a conventional white light microscope, thereby guiding surgeons away from normal brain tissue.
This study aims to determine whether patients who have had 5-ALA used in their operation have a greater extent of resection, longer time until re-operaiton and an improved survival rate compared to standard techniques. This is a pilot study of 20 patients to determine feasibility prior to applying for a larger trial.REC name
