Research summary
The purpose of this study is to collect information about a new biscuit called 'Fitabisc'. Fitabisc is a chocolate cookie which contains the most important antioxidants Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and the mineral Selenium.
The potential purpose of the biscuit is to provide nutritional support to patients prior to having bowel surgery with the aim that this may have a positive effect on a variety of surgical outcomes. However determing whether that might be the case is a possible future project. The aim of this initial study is simply to see whether or not patients find the biscuit palatable (tasty) and can manage to eat the required number of biscuits prior to their operation. Participants will be asked to eat up to 4 biscuits a day for a minimum of 5 days immediately prior to their admission for bowel surgery. They will be asked to record the platability of the biscuit, the quantity of bisuits they ate each day and, if they could not eat all the daily ration of biscuits, to explain why this was the case. We will follow progress after surgery so we can be alerted to any possible adverse effects of eating the biscuit, though none are expected.
