Research summary
Patients with Huntington’s disease can experience a number of changes to their thinking that evolve over the course of the disease that may make them more vulnerable to becoming the victim of financial abuse. For example, they can act impulsively, prompting them to make quick, ill informed decisions; they may become inflexible in their thinking which may make it hard for them to reverse a poor course of action and they can also have difficulty accurately evaluating the risks in situations. We are currently undertaking some research to determine how these changes influence the way in which people with Huntington’s disease make decisions about their money. To complement this work we want to find out exactly how much of a problem financial abuse is for the Huntington’s disease community to do this we will be running a series of focus groups with different people from within the HD community (both patients and carers/companions) followed by a large, web-based survey.
