Research summary
Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) techniques use inserted markers to track the movement of a tumour during a radiotherapy course, allowing the treatment delivery to be adjusted and more accurately targeted. This study will focus on rectal cancer, and will compare two different methods of marking out the tumours in preparation for IGRT. Rectal cancer patients will have either surgical clips or gold seeds positioned in the surrounding tissue around their tumour, which will then be visualised by CT imaging at each radiotherapy appointment. Through constant monitoring of the markers in this way, we hope to determine which is the better method for marking out these tumours, not only in terms of visibility and image quality on CT scans, and general accuracy in reflecting tumour position, but also when taking into account ease of marker insertion, stability and tolerability, and the incidence of procedure-related complications. The establishment of a preferred choice of marker will be used to inform a larger future study into the benefit of using an IGRT protocol for locally advanced rectal cancer.
