  • Research summary

The heart is made up of two major pumps which are split in to the right and left sides. The right sided heart pumps blood through the lungs. Sadly, many young adults are affected by diseases that stop the right sided heart pump working effectively. We believe that the care received by these people could be improved through new research.

In those who have a problem with the right sided heart pump, it has been shown that a scar forms within the heart. The size of the scar seems to be important to both quality of life and life expectancy. Because of this, doctors try to measure the size of the scar using an MRI scan. Unfortunately, an MRI scan is not very good at measuring the size of the scar. If we could more accurately measure the size of the scar, it would help decide who would be suitable for intensive treatments.

Our plan is to use a new type of scan called a PET scan. It involves a special tracer which travels to the heart where it shows up areas of scar, helping doctors measure it accurately. If we are successful, it would mean doctors are better able to give the right treatment to the right person at the right time. In this pilot study, we plan to scan 12 people with a problem of the right side of the heart and 3 healthy people as a control. If the PET scan correctly identifies areas of scar, we will apply for funding to expand the study to include more participants, and make associations with progression of imaging-assessed changes.
