Research summary
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a hereditary condition. Affected untreated individuals typically have high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) which causes heart disease at a much earlier age than would be expected. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of FH are essential but unfortunately neither is being accomplished optimally and this is a global issue. There is wide variability worldwide both in disease recognition and in clinical management of FH. Moreover data on FH is held in disparate forms in different countries making communication between clinicians from different countries difficult. Global collaboration is essential in data sharing and can reduce redundant and duplicated research efforts. The Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaborative (FHSC) project aims to collect data on FH from investigators worldwide to form a registry. The registry will be based in Imperial College London, UK. Each country will have a national lead who will collect anonymised FH data from contributing clinicians. The collected data will then be transferred to Imperial College London. Manchester will be the national lead for UK in this project.
