Data collection arrangements
This research database is designed to help counsel women of child bearing age who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. For some of these women their disease may permit fertility sparing surgery so that they can try to conceive following treatment of their ovarian cancer. We plan to speak to women who have undergone this fertility sparing surgery in the last 10 years as well as women who are continuing to undergo this type of surgery. During their routine follow up appointment we plan to ask the following questions:
1) Attempts made by patients to conceive?
2) Have there been any pregnancy losses?
3) Have there been successful pregnancies?
4) If the patient conceived was it naturally or by assisted reproductive techniques?
5) Were there any pregnancy related complications?
6) Did they deliver by vaginal delivery or caesarean section?
7) Has the patient been investigated for or diagnosed with sub fertility?
8) Has there been any disease recurrence and if so have they had any subsequent treatment? These questions are considered routine follow up questions for women who have chosen this treatment option, however to date this information has not been recorded centrally to facilitate analysis for research purposes.
Research programme
In the past 10 year 114 women have opted for fertility sparing surgery in Guys & St Thomas' Hospital. As ongoing evidence suggests this type of surgery is safe, that number continues to grow. This research database will provide evidence about the likely success and challenges when it comes to conceiving that women who opt for this type of treatment may encounter. This in turn will empower women to make evidence based decisions about their treatment.
